Reach - Entry #11

Funereal art is an often overlooked piece of our cultural heritage. Hispanics have their "hornitos", the Pennsylvania Dutch their hex symbols and winged skulls,Haitians their veves, and for me there is none more evocative than the statue.

These works speak as much as about the living as they do the dead. They speak to the very core of our beliefs about reality, about God, about purpose. They speak to our longing, that which is visible but just escapes our grasp. A stone cherub extends her fragile hand downward as if to take our hand, to return to whince she came, from where she's gone. Her fingers are frail and broken, and we fear she may indeed be gone, forever.
